Perhaps the most compelling moment of the episode came when Castle and Beckett were saying goodnight to one another at the precinct, with Castle heading home to drive Alexis to her dorm the next morning and Beckett needing to stay and do some more work on their case. Realizing that they were not able to part ways with a proper goodbye kiss, as they have become so accustomed to up until now, the two were seemingly heartbroken. Castle, however, came up with a brilliant and touching idea for how they could still express their feelings for one another: through a simple, yet meaningful handshake. Castle gently took Beckett’s hand in his, expressing what that handshake really meant, and Beckett followed suit. It was a genuinely touching moment that perfectly set the stage for this to become their way of expressing their feelings when they can not do so publicly, much like coffees and the word “always” symbolized their silent expression of their feelings in the past.
